GORILLA BISCUITS - Start Today 12”
(1989, USA, Revelation)

I remember pining so hard, wonder when the second LP was going to come out, and then it never did. It’s probably a good thing because these members went on to do other bands that made more sense for what they wanted to do at the time. There was really no need for a post-HC GB album to come out. This record meant a lot to me as a kid, people tend to dismiss this record now, because they can’t relate to it anymore. This record played a big role in my formative years and had something to do with me becoming a vegetarian in 1990 (still am). I will never forget it.

CRASS - Penis Envy 12”
(1981, U.K., Crass Records)

Typically thought of as Crass’s most accessible album, but this in no way diminishes its greatness. I would like to know how many of these have been pressed in total. It’s pretty amazing, if you think about it.

STONE DAGGER - The Siege Of Jerusalem 7”
(2013/2014, USA, Electric Assault)

Vinyl pressing after a limited tape release. Here’s another metal project from Boston’s HC circle. This time I believe this was all written by the vocalist and had only a little guitar solo help. This feels like it has heavy influences from the 70s metal greats like Rainbow, Deep Purple, and so on. I really like these two tracks and for me, if done well, I could see liking an LP of this even more than Magic Circle’s album.

DESPERAT - Hardcore Deluxe 12”
(2010/2011, Sweden, D-Takt & Råpunk)

Some people seem to really like this band and some don’t. Personally I don’t see what the issue is, what is there not to like? Raw Swedish d-beat from a member of Mob47. The recording is raw, but still powerful. The over-boosted treble gets a little distracting when the high hat gets super loud out of nowhere, but I guess this is basically a demo, so there’s no need to have a fit about it. Originally put on tape and then came this obnoxiously low vinyl press of 300 (200 black covers, 100 white covers).

SURVIVAL - Sweet Scarlet Madness 7” flexi
(2014, USA, Lexi’s Flexis)

I have heard some rumblings about this NYC band, so I decided to check out this flexi. Cool artwork, but sadly, there is nothing else about this that catches my attention…either vocally or musically. The recording sounds good enough for what they are doing, but it just fails to deliver anything memorable.

FLESH WORLD - A Line In Wet Grass 7”
(2014, USA, Iron Lung)

This is everything the Survival flexi should have been. Great vocals, interesting guitar riffs and ambient textures, good songs all the way around. There are some people trying to do this kind of thing right now and I think Flesh World is one of the few doing it right. You really have to have good vocals to pull this off.

ZOUNDS - Can’t Cheat Karma 7”
(1980, U.K., Crass)

Fantastic goddamned record. I can’t fathom this record being anything short of mind blowing when it came out. It is so smart and catchy…not to mention the recording is perfect. The wonderful guitar playing can’t be ignored either. Amanda and I are going through a big Zounds phase and I am realizing that we are missing two crucial E.P.s…we have to rectify that. I guess they have a new LP (released 2011), I am really curious to hear it. The “come back” 7”, “This Land” was awesome, but those were old songs. I will report back on the new LP.

ZOUNDS - Dancing b/w True Love 7”
(1982, U.K., Rough Trade)

I associate this record with the Zounds’ “later era” where they had more of a catchy/new wavey-ish sound. I absolutely love this stuff. Dancing is a huge downer if you are paying attention to the lyrics. And I can only imagine what it would be like if kids today were listening to songs like True Love, where it makes them think and criticize conventional ideas about the subject. Great 7”.
